Concert on the Square Is an Orchestrated Success

Glasgow and Barren County residents show their patriotism every Independence Day with an impressive musical celebration in downtown Glasgow.

Concert on the Square began in 1999 and provides quality musical entertainment for free throughout the evening. The concert always takes place near the Fourth of July, with the 2010 spectacular tentatively scheduled for July 3.

“Attendance is free thanks to about 12 corporate sponsors, along with the local governments of Glasgow and Barren County,” says Tommy Lyons, committee member with Concert on the Square. “The Glasgow-Barren County Chamber is also greatly involved by promoting and supporting all the activities that take place that evening.”

One of the most impressive parts of the festivities is a concert by the Louisville Orchestra. The orchestra has performed nine of the 11 years that the celebration has occurred, and the ensemble will be in attendance once again in 2010.

“The Nashville Symphony played here one year, and another year we didn’t have the concert because of inclement weather,” Lyons says. “But every other year, the Louisville Orchestra has performed its classical and patriotic music selections. We are happy to have them here again in 2010.”

Concert on the Square is staged downtown on the courthouse lawn, and crowd estimates are 3,000 to 4,000. The orchestra is always situated on the east side of the square, right in the street. Before the main performance, some local bands entertain the arriving crowd with classical music.

“We have a world-class orchestra playing patriotic music every Independence Day, so we also hire a top professional stage crew from Louisville to amplify the sound for the evening,” Lyons says. “Attendees hear great music wherever they are seated along the square. It is an inspiring event.”
