South Regional Postsecondary Education Center Is a One-Stop Shop for Education
There’s a place in Glasgow where students are earning bachelor’s degrees in psychology and learning to weld – all under the same roof.
The South Regional Postsecondary Education Center hosts classes and programs from Western Kentucky University and Bowling Green Community College. The center is also home to Glasgow Technology Campus‚ a regional campus for Bowling Green Technical College.
“Our mission is to provide our constituents access to a seamless post-secondary education‚” says Juanita Bayless‚ director of the Glasgow Campus of Western Kentucky University. “We are proud to serve our students as one student body having access to the resources of all three educational entities.”
Students can earn associate’s and bachelor’s degrees and take master’s-level courses‚ or they can take courses like welding‚ HVAC and computer-aided drafting from the technical college.
Campus enrollment has increased by close to 500 students since the facility opened in 2002‚ and there has been a major shift toward more full-time students‚ Bayless says.
More full-time faculty have come on board to lead studies in agriculture‚ chemistry‚ communications‚ English‚ folk studies‚ history‚ math‚ geography and biology.
Another recent addition is a collaboration with local high schools. Students in their junior and senior years who want a more rigorous academic schedule are now able to enroll in college-level courses for dual credit.
The campus also provides specialized training to business and industry. A group of more than 100 farmers recently participated in grant-funded computer and welding training‚ and similar opportunities exist for other groups.
“Our goal remains to identify the needs of our constituents‚” Bayless says‚ “and to continue to grow to meet those needs.”
