All the Comforts of Home
cream & sugar café, dining, food, glasgow,
Add one more attraction to the list of caves and unique destinations that have drawn generations of families, spelunkers and other travelers to central Kentucky.
The Cream & Sugar Café opened in 2007 to rave reviews for its comfort food and cozy atmosphere.
Located in downtown Cave City, the restaurant became an instant gathering spot, where locals and tourists head for home cooking in a welcoming and unpretentious atmosphere.
Sisters and co-owners Jan Stoller and Joan Newell retired from other careers in other parts of the country and decided to return home to Cave City to start a new chapter in life.
They soon opened the Cream & Sugar Café, modeled after the kind of café the sisters wanted to enjoy.
“We wanted a place where people would feel comfortable coming in and having a conversation and a meal without feeling rushed,” Stoller says. “It’s a soft, cozy place.”
The restaurant is known for its homemade soups, sandwiches and pies.
Popular menu items include the chicken salad sandwich and the cattleman roast beef sandwich, made with green peppers, horseradish and cheddar cheese. The lemon pie and peanut butter pies sell out quickly. In the fall, pumpkin crisp and apple pies draw a devoted following.
For Stoller and her sister, the atmosphere is as critical as the fresh ingredients used in their menu items.
Renovations to their downtown space included restoring one wall to its original brick. The remaining walls are painted a soft, beeswax yellow with white trim. The original hardwood floors were sanded and restored. And the walls are covered with artwork created by local painters and photographers.
The restaurant, located at 105 Broadway, is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday; on Sunday, it’s open from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
