Why there is no one answer

The honest answer to ‘how long does it take’ is that there is no single published processing time for a Taiwan visa. Processing is handled by individual ROC overseas missions, and each mission publishes its own guidance. The same visa can carry different expected windows at different missions, and the actual time depends on the case.

What does not vary is the structure: an application is examined by the consular office, an interview may be required, cases needing further review are referred to the Bureau of Consular Affairs for approval, and only then is the visa issued. Any one of those steps can lengthen the process.

What the published guidance looks like

Because each mission publishes its own figures, the numbers you will see vary widely. Some missions list a regular-service window of around five working days with a shorter expedited option; others list several weeks for a visitor visa; and some missions describe windows of a few working days for regular service. All of them carry the same caveats:

• the window is excluded the day of submission and counted in working days,
• requests for additional documents, corrections, further evaluation or cases from designated countries reset the clock,
• cases that require an interview or referral to the Bureau of Consular Affairs take longer,
• and the window is a guide, not a promise — the outcome and timing belong to the reviewing office.

The practical conclusion is to plan around the longer end and confirm the figure with the specific mission that will process your application, rather than relying on a number from a summary.

The application flow

Visitor visa applications are made through the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ online system, then printed and submitted to the mission:

1. Fill out the application online at the Bureau’s visa application site and print the completed form.
2. Submit the signed form and supporting documents to the overseas mission (or, in some cases, the mission may accept them by mail).
3. The mission examines the application and may request an interview.
4. Cases requiring further review are referred to the Bureau of Consular Affairs for approval.
5. Once approved, the visa is issued and you enter before its validity expires.

Note that online application data can be invalidated if the printed form is not submitted within the window the mission specifies, so do not complete the online step and then delay the submission. How to plan so timing never becomes the problem

Because processing time cannot be guaranteed, the planning rules are straightforward:

• Apply well in advance of travel — treat the mission’s longer published window as your baseline, and add buffer for a possible interview or document request.
• Prepare documents completely the first time — the most common cause of delay is a follow-up request for missing or incorrectly authenticated documents, which restarts the clock.
• Check the specific mission’s website — the guidance at your mission is the only figure that matters for your case.
• Rush service, where offered, is a mission-specific option — some missions provide an expedited service at extra cost, but it is not a guarantee of approval and is not available everywhere.
• Know whether you need a visa at all — many nationalities enter visa-free for short stays, which removes the visa process entirely; the allowances depend on your passport.
