Taiwan ARC Renewal: A Step-by-Step Checklist for Renewing on Time

When the renewal window opens

Your Alien Resident Certificate — juliu zheng (居留證), the ARC — is valid for a period tied to your residence purpose. Well before that date, the National Immigration Agency (NIA) accepts extension applications.

The practical rule: do not start the renewal at the expiry date. The window opens months ahead, and filing early is what prevents an overstay. If the ARC lapses, you are overstaying, which brings fines, exit requirements and consequences for later applications.

Find your current expiry date on the card itself and on the NIA record, then set the renewal for the start of the window rather than the last week. Treating the expiry date as a deadline for starting the paperwork is the single most common failure.

What the renewal requires

A standard renewal file looks like this:

• Current ARC and passport — passport validity is a frequent blocker, so renew the passport first if it is close to expiring
• Continued proof of purpose — updated employment certificate or contract for workers, enrolment proof for students, or the equivalent for your category
• Proof of address in Taiwan
• Photograph to specification
• Fee — the current amount is published by the NIA; check it before you go

The recurring item people miss is passport validity. Many applicants arrive with a valid ARC and an expiring passport and are sent back to renew the passport or update its number first. Check the passport before building the whole file.

Online or at the service centre

The NIA accepts many extension applications through its online system, which avoids a visit for straightforward cases — same residence purpose, no change of employer, no document questions.

When an online route is available for your category:

1. Log in to the NIA system and open the extension application for foreigners
2. Enter the ARC number and passport details
3. Upload the required documents and pay the fee
4. Track the result in the application status

When it is not — or your case involves a change — book an appointment at an NIA service centre. Centres exist in every county and city, and Taipei’s main office is busy; a smaller county office is often faster for the same application. Check queue and appointment options before travelling.

Changes that are NOT a simple renewal

A renewal extends your stay on the same basis. If the basis changed, an extension is the wrong application.

• Change of employer — your ARC is tied to its residence purpose. A new employer needs a labor work permit for you before anything follows. When the employer changes, the record must be updated through the job-change procedure, not hidden inside a renewal.
• Change of residence purpose — moving between study, work and family residence is a change of status/re-application with its own requirements.
• Job gap — a period between jobs is a gap in your residence basis. The NIA has published rules for job-seeking periods; check them before resigning, not after, since the wrong gap turns a renewal into a problem.
• Address change — a move must be reported within the published deadline. Skipping this only surfaces at renewal time.

If your situation changed rather than just the date, ask the NIA what application fits before you book, so the renewal is not rejected for the wrong reason.

A renewal checklist before you file

Run through this before submitting:

1. Confirm the expiry date on the ARC and the current renewal window on the NIA site
2. Check passport validity — renew or update the passport first if needed
3. Get updated proof of purpose (employment, enrolment or equivalent)
4. Confirm current address is reported correctly; if not, fix that first
5. Prepare photograph and fee per the current published specifications
6. Choose the online route if your category allows it, otherwise book the service centre

Keep a copy of everything you submit. Cards are reissued where required; for many extensions the record updates without a new physical card.
